The life and legacy of the illest lyricist, The Notorious B.I.G., told by his family and friends in new documentary.
Netflix has just released the trailer for Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell, an estate-approved documentary that has been in the works for more than four years.
The movie, which will be released on Netflix on March 1st, was directed by Emmett Malloy and executive produced by Biggie’s mother Voletta Wallace, Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, Mark Pitts, Stanley Buchthal, and Big’s former manager and current estate manager Wayne Barrow.
The documentary, which is being billed as an origin story, will feature interviews with family and close friends — like Lil’ Cease, Faith Evans, Puff, Voletta, and more — as well as a bunch of never-before-seen early footage. Much of the footage came from Damian “D Roc” Butler, a close friend of Biggie who was there from the start.
In a statement about the film, Netflix said:
“In the wake of the Notorious B.I.G.’s landmark induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and ahead of what would have been his 50th birthday, Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell offers a fresh look at one of the greatest, most influential rappers of all time by those who knew him best.”
I Got a Story to Tell was originally announced in 2017 as One More Chance. But only now is the movie ready to be released, just months before the rapper’s 50th birthday.
In a statement given to Rolling Stone, Malloy talked about the delay:
“The running joke about documentary films is often how long they take to make. This film lived up to all those stereotypes, taking us four years to develop and make it… Through those years we were immersed in Brooklyn in the 70s through the 90s. It is easy to see how much Brooklyn has changed since Christopher Wallace was a kid, but it’s also clear that many things about being a young black man in this country have not changed.”
There have been many instances where Biggie’s life and career were put on the screen, including the 2007 movie Notorious and the 2018 USA docuseries Unsolved.
This will be the first time the estate is putting its name behind a documentary. Check out the first trailer below.
